How Long Does Heat Pump Installation Take?

The full timeline, stage by stage
The on-site install is the short part. Here is what the whole journey looks like and roughly how long each stage takes.
Stage 1: Survey (week 1)
We visit and carry out a heat loss survey of every room. This usually takes a couple of hours. It is the foundation of a good installation, so we never skip or shortcut it.
Stage 2: Design and quote (within a few days)
Using the survey data we design the system and send a fixed quote showing the grant deduction. You have time to review it and ask questions.
Stage 3: Grant application and ordering (1 to 3 weeks)
Once you go ahead, we submit your Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and order the equipment. This is usually the longest stage and runs in the background while you carry on as normal.
Stage 4: Installation (1 to 3 days)
Our engineers arrive, remove the old boiler, fit the outdoor unit and cylinder, make any agreed radiator changes and connect the controls. For most homes this is one to two days.
Stage 5: Commissioning and handover (same visit)
We fill, test and balance the system, set the controls for your property, and walk you through how it works. You receive your MCS certificate and manufacturer warranty registration on completion.
What affects the timeline
- Property size and complexity, which affects on-site days.
- Whether radiators or pipework need upgrading.
- Equipment lead times for specific models.
- Grant processing, which varies but is usually a couple of weeks.
- Whether insulation work is needed first for grant eligibility.
Keeping disruption low
We plan installations so your time without heating and hot water is short, protect your home while we work, and tidy up each day. The outdoor unit goes in outside, the cylinder is sited sensibly, and pipework follows existing routes wherever possible. Most homeowners are surprised how unobtrusive it is.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to install an air source heat pump?
The physical installation usually takes one to three days on site. From the first survey to a fully commissioned system, the end-to-end timeline is typically two to six weeks, with most of that time taken by the survey, system design and grant processing rather than the install itself.
Will my heating be off during installation?
Only briefly. Your existing heating runs until the changeover, and the period without heating is usually limited to part of the installation. Installers plan the work to minimise time without hot water and heating, and the new system is commissioned before they leave.
How much disruption is involved?
Less than people expect. The outdoor unit goes in outside, the cylinder is sited in a utility area, loft or cupboard, and most pipework follows existing routes. Some homes need a few radiators changed. Installers protect floors and furniture and tidy up daily.
